One problem is that we don't know what kind of job you have or applied for. I'd say that the best thing is to watch the websites of the particular institutions that offer courses in what you teach.

Coming back to salary, I have just left the HCT system (thank God!), and I heard that some new hires were starting on 15,000 dirhams a month. With more experience (10 years plus) and greater qualifications (beyond MA/Ed. level), you should be able to hassle them for even more.

Why you say that, is it so awful there. Throughout all post, yes HCT has some disadvs, but also has many positive advantgs. What did bother you specifically.
Also for all other people, I read that HCT is a very stable place..also the hiring process is very organized. On the other side I have read many ads in Petroleum Institute ans they almost repeat this adv evey 3 to 4 months....This is for 2 years now..I surprized from that..so how also PI is hiring and why they repeat the same ads for more than 2 years..!! |

Hi,
Thanks for your continuous replies.
In answer to what 'type' of job I'm looking for....it's similar to any like this:
http://recruit.hct.ac.ae/job_details.asp?job_seq=31344
As you can see the closing date has been pushed back to 15th August - which I expected as HR said the interview process would only begin in the middle of August (the original closing date was the end of June, then the middle of July, then the end of July) so maybe it was always going have a closing date for the middle of August.
I still don't think I'm going to get an interview for this position - but saying that I have not yet received anything to say I haven't yet - so we will wait and see. I meet all the criteria, have been doing a very similar role at the largest UK University for a long time, have a MA in Online and Distance Education, but maybe I'm missing something they might be looking for.....
Looking at this position at HCT where would the accomodation be?
Ah well, I'll keep my fingers crossed and keep looking.
Cheers

Accomodation is spread out - there is no "set" housing , just what has become available (by people leaving) or what has been acquired recently. Singles and couples can count on a large 2 or 3 bedroom apartment and families a 3 or 4 bedroom villa usually. |

Thanks helennl.
I would be traveling over with my fiance (who would be my wife by then!) and my two year old son - so would that qualify for a 3br villa do you think?
So if I got an interview, and was successful with the interview, and got recommended for employment etc, would January 2010 be the likely starting date?
cheers again

HCT is a very long way off the mark with salary in comparison to the PPP schools! Even ADEC, which is the lowest payer, is higher than that. Maybe it's worth putting up with all the rot that has gone on over the past 3 years in the PPPs VS? |

helloworld...
...that looks like a job that is perfect for your credentials. But are you perhaps lacking enough years of experience? HCT needs can often trump meeting all of their 'wished-for' requirements. Also if they need you immediately, they have the skill to get you in more quickly than January. The kicker might be the government security check.
Zoot...
...with HCT, you do get a higher furniture allowance and educational benefits for your children if you have any. And, the educational requirements are completely different. It is not the same group of teachers applying at HCT versus the ADEC system. I would bet that there are almost no teachers at HCT who are certified to teach K-12 and few who could get certification without some required coursework. Then there is the fact that many are like me... I wouldn't have considered going into the schools even if they doubled the salary and I do have my original degree in secondary education.

Based on past history, you would have an excellent chance at a villa in Fujairah, Sharjah, Al Ain and RAK. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are iffy because of extortionate rents in the recent past. |

In the job details Mandatory requirements section - it says they are after someone with 5 years of experience - I have 9 years in this particular field! (as well as 10 more in a very similar field) So hopefully that wouldn't be the stumbling block.....?!?!
If the interviews are held in august - surely they couldn't get everything in place (visas, certificate checks, reference checks etc etc) to bring the 'winning candidate' over that quickly...
We'll see what happens!
I just wish there were more jobs like this in the UAE!!!!
cheers

What is classed as a 'villa' in UAE terms? A villa in Europe may be slightly different....

I guess yes, January is the most likely starting date. However, they can tell you in less than a month you are accpeted and say two months more for scurity checking, so say 3 months after August, that is November...so Jan is not that far from that. |

A villa is a house, one or two floors, maybe three if the maid's quarters are at the top, detached, semi-detached or a town house. It would normally have a garden, maybe small, and possibly a communal garden with a pool. Our villa has three bedrooms, a large landing/living area, an extremely large living room, maid's room and four bathrooms. Garden all round. We also have access to a pool but as there are Arabs with the same access, we don't use the pool. |
