Olivo, who earns five figures a month and lives in Mexico City's upscale Pedregal neighborhood, considers himself middle class. |
Can't they give us a little more info? 10,000 is "5 figures" but so is 99,999. And that's quite a difference! |

You tell me... which end of your scale would it take to live in Mexico City's upscale Pedregal neighbourhood ?

Pedregal eh? Somewhere on the higher end of those five figures. But even there, he'd be on the low end of what his neighbours make. |

I suppose this is slightly off topic, but one of the things that hasn't been mentioned on this thread so far is how many of those who are a little affluent, and live in nicer places, are involved in the drug trade or other illicit activities.
Ours is a slightly upscale place. In 18 months one neighbor was assassinated, in debt over one million USD to people who didn't like not getting repaid; one neighbor was arrested on an Interpol warrant and charged with importing 40 KG of cocaine into the U.S., and another seems to fit the profile- black hummer with smoked glass, no visible means of support- but is still free.
More than 50% of the neighbors appear to have real jobs; the rest, who knows. |

For that reason, if I were super-monied, I'd prefer to live in one of the nice but not ostentatious neighbourhoods in D.F., such as Coyoacn, La Florida or San Borja Insurgentes.

Seconded what Phil said. Were not super-monied, of coursed, but comfortable enough. Im satisfied with where we live, I wouldnt want to be any more upscale. On our block, we have some tin-roof cinder-block houses, a couple of vecindades, but also some maestros and doctores withhow to describe them?middle class houses, and the rest are in between. |

Second that, Phil, what a beautiful part of the city. We were stunned by the tranquil atmosphere and beauty of the zocalo, there. |

During the week, yes, but at the weekend it is filled with people, traffic, franeleros and hysterically whistling policemen. I was thinking a bit further west of there. If you have the opportunity to go again, check out the Del Carmen and Barrio Santa Catarina areas, and Chimilistac on the opposite side of Av. Universidad. |

For several years I'd correct my SS if they wrote that. Then I learned me some English and stopped.
Even started using it myself

TEACHER: Jorge, what do you call a person who keeps on talking when people are no longer interested?

I think in the US it is less economic and more education that determines if you are middle class, but not so much in Mexico, where a taco vendor can make more than a teacher (and often does). |
