A lot of the agency hires for MOM are also 'settled' as it were-the majority come from India, Egypt, Pakistan, Sudan....they see this as a long term opportunity/ commitment-and relocate here with family, buy furniture, take big loans for new family cars etc......they are very unlikely to walk away-even with contractual changes they mean reductions across the board. |

Teachers from the sub-continent (e.g. India, Bagladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan), Phillipines and other Arab speaking states (e.g.Tunesia, Jordan, Lebanon) have little chance of employment in the TESOL world, except for other desert states (e.g. KSA, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, UAE).
Their lack of native speaker status and often low educational status (e.g. Bachelor degree from obscure universities) leaves them no other option.
Native speakers and those from "broken Russia" (e.g. Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Kazastan) will find greener pastures.
Staff morale will decrease as the same job for substanially less money and holidays has to be done.
Workload already had increased to double the amount in the last half year (e.g. from 20 students to 40 students) per class.
My guess is, that weekly teaching hours will be increased next.
The squeeze will continue. |

There are lower salaries that Al Nawa / CAS positions.
Bahla Training Institute, Bahla, Oman
$2000 per month with shared accommodation.
On the other hand, students [paying?] probably somewhat more motivated in general.

This appears to be a small private language school... thus the truly pitiful pay and benefits.
The saving grace would probably be the students, but...

Another example of trying to do things on the cheap. $2000 a month + 'shared accommodation '?!! A teaching 'couple' will be on almost half the salary that they would make working at a MOM college for TATI, as an example. The times are certainly a'changing.... |

I couldn't agree more with VS and Tazz. Any Western teacher considering moving to the Gulf for the above package, IMHO, ought to have their head read! Geez, I know plenty of TEFLers earning more than that in Cambodia and that should tell you everything that you need to know . |

We're currently witnessing the exodus of Westerners and their replacement with sub-continentals to save a few Rials.
The few remaining Westerners with decent contracts from the good old days will also move away as the workplace (conditions/ morale) will become intolerable.

There might be a couple three strongholds still left in Muscat. MTC and SQ ring a bell. MTCers might be feeling the slow squeeze (no raises/more hours/reduced holidays), but my feeling is SQ will stay the course. Any other places that might still be ok for westerners in Oh Man? |

Yes, but if you knew the wild, lithe and swarthy Bahla's Bedouins...
Hmm, motivation...
Has anyone in the notorious - for jinns and shirk - Bahla Walyiat ever used the word? And will they ever use it? And should they??? Should we spoil them?

Looks like a great deal of people left for whatever reason (low salary, high workload, few holidays, poor treatment, boring lifestyle)...never a good sign....revolving door situation...
The academic year has already started with the annual fight for an acceptable office desk/ workable computer/ decent timetable,etc...
By the time the new recruits arrive, they will only get the leftcovers and will have to put up with it until the 2017 start of the academic year.
That is, if they last that long..... |

I see AL NAWA are looking specifically and emailing candidates for Al Musannah College of Technology near Muscat. Slightly better offer than for the CAS's.
Basic Salary - R.O. 800/-
Housing Allowance - R.O. 300/-
Transportation Allowance- R.O. 70/-
Living/Utility Allow - R.O. 50/-
In lieu of family tickets - R.O. 100/-
In lieu of Gratuity - R.O. 80/-
Gross Salary - R.O. 1,400/- per month
Of course if you're a single person, it'll be 1300 due to the family tickets compensation being irrelevant, I presume. |

That's the general consensus at my college of technology. A huge exodus of western teachers left at the end of last year. None have arrived to replace them. Instead we've gotten some Omanis and a shuffling of staff. |
