Just in case anyone is curious about the prayers heard thoughout the Kingdom last night, here is some infro. I remember, a few months ago there was a prayer around 2am and I was awaken by the loud speakers. I had no idea what is was for and thought maybe 'something' had happened.

Saudi4Ever,
When I was last in Oman, there was a full eclipse of the moon just before I left. Quite a marvellous sight when you can view it out in the desert with a clear dark sky. But, there were no additional prayers done in the mosques.
Nor for the partial eclipse of the sun the year before. Although I was quite surprised that they closed all the businesses and schools and everyone was told to go home and NOT go outside!!
They seemed quite concerned that people would look at it and ruin their eyes - not an outrageous worry I guess.

I remember being somewhat worried a year ago in the middle of the Iraq war when the Friday prayer took twice as long as usual, and seemed to be twice as enthusiastic. I was half-expecting strange looks but didn't get any. The next day a student explained: they had been praying for rain. |

Actually Scot, I knew this time. It was the first time that freaked me out.
Cleo, when I was a child I was so afriad to even look up if it were a eclispe. Shutting down businessnes and schools are a bit extreme, they could just educate the people to the damage looking at the sun could cause one on a full eclispe.
Stephen what were you expecting? It beats a rain dance |

Rain dances are fun and just as effective!!
When I was a kid and we had an eclipse, I would always head to my father's garage and get a welder's helmet - works like a charm.
Gee, Ms Ever, I sure hope that Cleopatra doesn't notice that you have us confused!!

I like the "ambiguity" of that sentence - does, "you have us confused" mean "you're mistaking me for her" or does it mean "you're making our brains spin?"
Hey, I'm confused (and yes - I'm confusing as well).
Regards,
John |
