Are there any teaching jobs in Oman that require just a CELTA? I also have eight years experience teaching in Japan and China and also at the University level there. Thank you. |

You also need a related BA (in education or English) and experience after the CELTA.

Thanks for the information. My BA is in History. Any chance after I get my CELTA at all? |

Not likely, since your degree is unrelated to TEFL. And again, for this region, employers want to see post-TEFL cert experience. |

So get my CELTA, work elsewhere for a few years after that, then look for jobs in Oman/Gulf area? |

Hnf my advice is to go ahead and get a CELTA. I have a TEFL, CELTA and an unrelated BA and after a few years teaching college/uni in Singapore, Saudi and Oman I have had a few good offers (direct hire offers with universities and colleges in Oman and a college in Qatar). I have not been successful in the UAE though so I doubt you could get work there as they truly do require you to have a related degree.
BTW I know a number of people working in different cities around Oman that have unrelated degrees. Some of them don't even have a CELTA but just have random TEFL certificates and have even been hired within the last year. Most of them are with dodgy companies that work with private universities and colleges around Oman but it is the door in and then you move up from there. They have all been approved by the relevant ministries.
I find that recruiting companies like TATI etc are very strict when they look at CVs via email but inevitably as the semester starts they don't have enough teachers and at that point they have offered jobs to a number of people I know who have unrelated degrees. This particularly relates to teachers that are in Oman.
In Oman, SQU is the only place that you probably have no chance getting a job with an unrelated BA, a CELTA and middle eastern university experience (read Saudi) but the rest of the universities and colleges are fair game...

It will be a crapshoot with the new rule. Lizzie was hired before the rule and there have been quite a few turned down for this reason in the last year since it came into effect.
IOW... don't count on a job in Oman... or Saudi...

VS. They will take any living breathing person in Saudi Arabia these days. What are you talking about?
I am friends in Korea who have unrelated BAs with no CELTA that are getting job offers at universities like Princess Noor. Most of the people I worked with in Saudi Arabia had unrelated degrees.
I don't know where you get your information from but the pay in Saudi has gone down and therefore the quality of teachers. They are even getting some people in on $2000 a month (I would never consider such an offer) so if they can save money rather than pay more experienced teachers with the right qualificatioons they will.
Saudi is not what it once was. |

I was really referring to Oman since this is on the Oman board... not Saudi. You are, of course, correct about Saudi and I have NEVER claimed any different. It has really gone downhill (even before you went there) and it hasn't been what it was for too many years now. That said, the jobs that will take any breathing person are normally unacceptable to all except the most desperate...

I was responding to your comment about Saudi above.
And yes, there are a lot of desparate people these days with the economy and the influx of young graduates into Asia. In Korea, I earned more 8 years ago than what people are getting paid as a salary now. I think very few people can really be picky these days and they take what they can get.

Sadly true Ms Lizzie... and the worst part is that it drags down the whole market for the rest of us.

Would a B.A. in Foreign Languages and a CELTA be enough? |
