Well, yeah, but I'm not talking about bennies. Straight wages probably average about 75-100 per hour actual in class time. |

sorry, but if you want to calculate your salary package, you need to include
them bennies. elsewhise, how are you going to compare your pay to
what others are making? my pay package includes housing and utilities
and interwebs and health insurance and flight allowance. how can you
exclude all those from your calculations? they all be direct financial
benefits.
bennies not included in my calculations include: no classes before 10am,
max 4 days teachin' (last semester only teach'd 3 days/week), the
respect and admiration of the administration and the chinese teachers,
the occasional reward from the department for being a team player
(thanks for all the hard work, why not take a short vacation to sanya?
we'll reimburse your hotel and meals.), no engrish corner, no outside
commitments, no office hours, no advertising/demos, hot and cold
running coeds, and so on. |

Thanks for the heads up. If 'thinking package' and including 'them bennies' then I'm doing way better than most. I already knew that, though. I'm kind of with johnpartee on this one though. Let's talk straight salary. |

2,000 us is what everyone gets everywhere except China. Now this site is mostly made up of recruiters who paint pictures for newbees who don't know anybetter. Recruiters make 5,000 us with little work. They just have to keep you on a job for a month.
Teaching English in China is tough and the pay should be higher than 2,000 green backs. |

Really? Everywhere?
If you teach EFL in the UK (as I do), the average job doesnt pay US$2000 for a 20 class hour week. And Ill use 20 hours as that is the bigger end of what people in China work.
And good luck for finding a job in the EU that pays that sort of money for a 20 hour (or less) working week.
^^^ and you'll have to find your own housing there too!
How about South America? From what I read wages are terribly low there too? $2000 for 20 class hours would appear unlikely, although that is anecdotally.
Thats two continents where people pretty much dont make $2000 for 20 class hours or less per week, in the average entry-level job.
There is a regular on these forums called ttompatz, who I believe is in Thailand. He'll tell you people entering EFL in Thailand dont get anywhere near $2000. 35,000 baht seems to be the entry-level standard. So again, miles under the wage suggested in this thread.
Of course, my posts dont count as Im one of the 'recruiters' right?
Most of us who have been around Daves for some time have had pretty positive experiences in China overall. I'd like to think we would also wish the same positive experiences for the newcomers who pop up with queries and questions here on the forum.
Sure, sometimes we disagree about locations, about qualifications, and about how to approach our work. We also disagree sometimes about tons of other subjects, but we all tend to give genuine advice with genuine information. In doing so, we hope that newcomers can make informed decisions based upon our experience.
Filling threads with talk of minimum wages that are observed without exception, talk of being paid in advance, anything remotely connected to the Chinese Foreign Teachers Union etc etc is just counter-productive and untrue. And that makes it not helpful. |

a brain surgeon in china earns the equivalent of about $1500/month,
whereas a chinese aerospace engineer merely earns $1200/month.
surely you can't be claiming that teaching engrish is more difficulter than
brain surgery or rocket science? |

Then this is the first time anywhere that I make more than a brain surgeon. (according to the last post) However, my doctor makes more than me. |

Where are you getting those numbers ?
Are you including all the grey money paid to doctors ?
Doctors in China often receive extra money before performing surgeries by patients wanting better care. |

He's a legend in the kimchi forums that shoots $hit straight. Not sure where he is now, as he bounces around (Korea, Philippines, Thailand, blah blah). He will be the first to tell you and anyone willing to listen that $2000usd is possible anywhere in Asia.

While not a brain surgeon, my Chinese wife is a surgeon that made about that as a gov. doctor. She just went to a private hospital and makes a little more now (still less than me being a lowly teacher of Engrishee). |
