Gasp. Just lesson planning for tomorrow and realized the classes are actually 45 minutes, not 40. Over the space of a week that's a good 3 extra hours I have to spend pretending to try to get the classroom computer to work ("Does anyone know where to plug in a USB? My Chinese is not so good!") and telling poo jokes. Ouch. How long 'til summer vacation again??

I'll be busy this term.

26 hours a week because of my colleague doing a runner. I don't mind too much, the FAO asked me first and I'm getting overtime for the extra hours.

However I've also been told I have to do a make-up class every Saturday morning because the school is closing early this summer. All the teachers, Chinese/foreign are doing this. And no-one is happy.
Great eh!

I won't be going back in September

I assume you're getting the extra days of summer holiday?
If so, why the unhappiness?

How's your schedule this semester?

don't know yet, as the schedules haven't been distributed, or even
prepared. schedule master is still on leave. but being a future-tense-
language-speaker, i am unable to plan for the future, so it doesn't matter
no way no how.

anyway, it's only noon on monday. classes don't begin until wednesday
morning. my FAO will return tonight, and 'should' be in the office sometime
tomorrow. i've been told i will 'maybe' get my schedule tuesday afternoon.
or evening. 'maybe.'

last information prior to spring festival was that FT's would have 12 hours
(@40 mins) per week, but a little birdie told me there may be some
changes.......some of the chinese teachers are requesting leave (broken
ankle, pregnancy, and so on), so there is the possibility of picking up a
few more hours.

You don't finish until 5.50? What a crappy schedule!

Summer vacation is unpaid??

My school seems a bit confused by this too, but haven't mentioned anything about overtime.

I guess it's due to CNY being a little later than usual this year?

Their "logic" is "This semester is only 18 weeks! Should be 20 weeks" neglecting the fact that *last* semester was 3 weeks longer so they actually did the extra classes they'll be "missing" this semester already.

Yes, a long summer holiday could become expensive.
It's more about losing my weekends though.
Would anyone be happy being told they only have one day off a week for the next three and a half months?

Still, it's not the end of the world....

14 x 45 minute periods. Fridays off (making a 3 day weekend).

What has annoyed me though is that I returned to the university two weeks early and used the time to lesson plan. I got the text book off my boss and lesson planned. Turned up to teach this morning...the students have got a new book. Meaning I wasted my time. It's things like this that make me believe the Chinese have zero organisational skills.

EDIT: Oh, and they still haven't given me the correct book. They haven't got a copy. My FAO spent close to an hour trying to find an electronic version to download.

Just got my schedule yesterday ... 20 classes a week at 40 minutes each. Five Oral English classes with 3 different levels (forms), and 15 English Subject classes with 3 other (and different) forms.

I'm teaching at an International school and not a university ... middle school (forms 1, 2, and 3) and high school (forms 4, 5, and 6).

The good news is I only have "Night Duty" once a week and 3 classes on Fridays. Night Duty at our school is from 6:50 to 9:10 and generally involves some tutoring and helping students with their homework.

The bad news is I have my DOS responsibilities too ... English department meetings, teacher evaluations, demonstration lessons and interviewing / evaluating potential new teachers. Should be fun!

Classes begin tomorrow ... have a GREAT semester, everyone! Very Happy

That's an impressive commitment. Hope you're making some pretty serious coin.

12 teaching hours on the weekend...which I do not mind at all. It eats up my schedule. They are broken up into only 4 classes. Each class is 3 50 minute periods long. 3 of the 4 are the same exact level in theory, same books anyway. Damn close to perfect.

I am sure I'll get a few classes during the week but if I am lucky it will only be one day and I have no night classes ever.

20hr contract at a mill.

I am happy with my schedule so far but I envy you Uni guys for your summer/winter holidays.

Seven 90 minute classes. No classes on Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday; one class on Friday, one on Monday. I like it.
