I've seen several ads that require one to send a photocopy of the bio page of one's passport along with all the other relevant documentation.

Having been involved peripherally in IT security in a previous job, this sends up automatic red flags. Even more as this is the very first contact. (I would expect this request only after one has made it past the preliminary cuts)

Am I being too paranoid in just completely skipping these ads?

Thank you,
Jean

Incidentally, doing a search for this only seems to bring up a list of such job placement ads. In fact, every search query I've done does this.

Submitting a scanned copy of your main passport page is quite the norm; prospective employers need to confirm your nationality and age, especially for visa purposes. Some also want to see what you look like.

Identity theft isn't likely to come from the scant bit of info on your passport page. And frankly, every time you travel abroad, you hand over your passport to anonymous hotel staff members to copy and record your info anyway. But if you're concerned about employers exploiting your information, you can always black out your passport number on the initial scanned copy.

Thanks.

I'll take your recommendation about the passport number also.

That really wasn't a recommendation. I've never redacted any of my passport info---it's just not necessary. But if you're paranoid about these things...
