I live in Vietnam and I was speaking to a long-term expat who had just visited Myanmar and he said it reminded him of Vietnam in the 1990s. I agree that this would be a fascinating time to be in Burma. Thanks Saya for a great thread and offering yourself as the 'go-to-guy' for questions.

Similar in what way?

VN in the '90s and the 2000's featured a very low cost of living and very easy visa extensions that you could get on your own at any travel agent without leaving the country. That's all changed, of course.

From what I've heard the cost of living in Myanmar is quite high and visas require sponsorship from a school or company.

So, it seems fairly different in that regard.

I think he was referring to it in the sense of a 'closed country' that was beginning to open up and becoming more exposed to greater foreign influence and investment.
