Is it normal for employers to ask for a copy of your residence card? What purpose would it serve them? |

Employers are advised in Q127-132 here http://www.immi-moj.go.jp/newimmiact_1/en/q-and-a.html about checking residence card details. I'm not sure if they are under a legal obligation to keep records of the ID of foreign employees, but taking a copy would seem about the quickest way of establishing the employee's correct address at least.
FWIW: Although the ARC is apparently being phased out, every employer (bona fide ~ LOL) I had took a copy of my ARC, passport, and whatever other documents (certificates etc) seemed relevant and helpful for their and my purposes. |

I'd imagine it's like US employers wanting a copy of your driver's license. |
