Recently I obtained the 13a Visa but I am beginning to regret it. I'm not yet retired but I thought that at least by having it I could work here. Yes, I can work legally here but virtually everywhere I go or read about the pay and the hours are simply awful. I am in the process of looking elsewhere (not in the Philippines) to work.
Are there any other benefits of having this thing besides working?

The ability to work and the removal of the necessity of an annual visa run (for balikbayans) or bi-monthly extensions (long stay tourist) are the benefits of the 13a. You can also start your own business (language school) if you have some connections abroad to find students.

If you have a degree and a TEFL cert (or some ability to convince the powers that be than you can actually teach English) there is work to be had teaching Koreans, Japanese and Russians.

The pay is about p300/hr or 30k-50k php per month (about the same as a fresh-off-the-plane newbie, would get in Thailand or China).

I found out that because I have my 13a that it will cost me well over a hundred dollars simply to board the plane out of here.

What are the reasons for this really high tax/penalty/etc?

OK well I left the airport last week and I was charged 550 pesos (I think that applies for everybody) and then when I went to the I-Card line I was charged an additional 2880.

Total: 3430 pesos

Can the 13a Visa be renewed at Philippine embassies overseas or must it be done in the Philippines?
