Hi

After reading a lot about the negative aspects of teaching in south america eg they are already overloaded with english teachers, long hours, basic pay, long transport times between students. I was wondering what the teaching situation is like in Uruguay? There doesnt seem to be as much information on Uruguay as there is for other countries

Are there more teaching opportunites than say, in Argentina?
And what kind of lifestyle is it possible to lead by teaching english in Uruguay? Cost of accomodation?

I have a BA, a CELTA qualification, and just spent 1 year teaching at an international school in China. What sort of prospects can I be looking at with this experience?

Thanks

Uruguay is a desirable place to live due to the relatively high quality of life there. As a result English teaching is relatively low paid (because they don't have to pay more to attract people) with the usual LatAm problems if you have to travel to different locations. You will need to be there and knock on doors to find a position.

I would also imagine, but don't know for sure, that there will be a lot of teachers looking to escape the deteriorating economic situation in Argentina, so it could be even more flooded than usual.

Having said that, as with most countries in LatAm, once you've got your foot in the door and have built up a reputation and your contacts, there are better positions to be had, or niches you can create for yourself.

Hi Bobby -

Did you wind up going to Uruguay? I am similarly situated - BA, CELTA, 3 years in China teaching at a college. Thinking about moving on to South America. Wondering if you did go to Uruguay. If so what do you think? If not, curious if you did make a move from China.
