Hi Everyone,

I am really hoping to teaching English in France this year. I have a BSc and 2 years of experience teaching High School Science. My level of french is intermediate. I also have a 150 hour online TESOL course certification, but no actual experience teaching ESL. Would you recommend enrolling in a TEFL course with an in-class component, or are my current qualifications sufficient enough to secure a job. I don't want to shell out a couple grand for something I may not need. Thanks!

First, most important question:-
What nationality is written on your passport?

If you don't have a passport issued by one of the 27 EU countries you face severe difficulties.

"I am really hoping to teaching English in France this year.
"

That makes me think that you're not UK, Scots or Irish nationality

The point is valid, though; if the OP is not from an EU member state (doesn't even matter if his country of origin is an Anglophone countries, actually), he's not legally eligible to work in France, or Spain, or Italy, etc.

Certification won't matter.

Scot47 and I are already counting down... In fact, I imagine it as already being a reality right now.

We are polishing our claymores and oiling our AK-47s as I write this.

We also have enough bricks for the neo-Hadrian's wall to make Berlin's look like Lego Toytown...

Are you sure you want to teach English? Are you a certified public school teacher? With two years experience, you may want to consider teaching sciences at an international school instead.

An online TESOL without practicum is not worth the paper it is printed on (sorry, it isn't) because it is below the bare minimum standard for most regions. If a company hires you with an online TESOL (no practicum) then they probably would have hired you without one.

I *personally* cannot recommend enough that a proper basic TESL certificate will be immensely helpful in a classroom. If you are qualified to teach sciences, then I recommend going the international school route because the pay and working conditions will be much better.

Oh, and come to Quebec when you are done! We are screaming for kinda-bilingual ESL teachers!

Trust Scot47 to have a claymore. Us modernists prefer the broadsword and dirk combination.
