Life-saving president? Man convinced to talk to Erdogan instead of jumping off a bridge (VIDEO)
One poor fellow in Turkey – who reportedly had family problems – was lucky enough to find himself on the same bridge and at the same time as president Recep Erdogan had been traveling through it. The man was talked out of a suicide attempt, media reported.
In a video released on Christmas day, the presidential motorcade is seen on Istanbul's Bosphorus Bridge – at the very same time that a man appears to be standing on it behind the guard rail, facing the bay.

I'm skeptical when it comes to politicians. I think if Obama was doing it, I might be more likely to believe in the sincerity of the actions. Or better yet, if Bernie Sanders was doing that, I would believe he was sincere in caring, because Bernie has shown moral consistency throughout his political career. What the Turkish president did is good PR. He could have been sincere. I have no clue. |

I would hardly call Erdogan 'life-saving'.....
More than 1,000 Turkish academics who signed a petition calling for an end to Ankara's military campaign against the Kurds, and accusing President Erdogan's government of breaching international law, are being investigated by police on suspicion of disseminating 'terrorist propaganda'.
Last Friday, 27 of the academics, who come from 90 Turkish universities, were arrested and held for questioning; they were later released. In a rare public rebuke from the US (Turkey's ally), Washington's ambassador, John Bass, warned that the arrests would have a chilling effect on 'legitimate political discourse across Turkish society'. However, Erdogan was unrepentant; he described the signatories as ' dark, nefarious and brutal' and accused the ' so-called intellectuals' of being 'fifth columnists' working for foreign powers. |

The reality is not enough Turks care about that. Having more of what would constitute a republic is not a priority for Turks, IMHO. Many gravitate to the notion of having a strong man, and they feel democracy is not for them, and that arresting journalists and what not is conducive to keeping the country stable. I'm skeptical. It's not my country. They're free to do what they want. I do believe in freedom of the press. I think every vibrant country needs that. |
