I am in dire need of software that will allow me to restrict access to only a few icons. In other words, I don't my students to access anything other than the software and files that I want them to access. I don't want them to access drives, quick launch bar, start menu, etc. I also want to be able to disable USB ports. Can someone please recommend such a software package - hopefully a freeware package? Thanks in advance.

You can exercise that kind of fine-grained control over user accounts with Linux out of the box.

If Linux isn't your thing (some information about OS and context would be useful here!), then you can do the same with Windows, but how you do it will depend largely on the version you're running. For example, if it's XP, you'll need XP Pro, I think.

windows server with active directory allows you to create a group policy to specify what clients access would be...task bar, drives, desktop, etc.

usb can be disabled by editing the registry.
