Bielefeld is a good place. I attended a conference there in the Volkshochschule a few years ago.

Interesting that this town is not in any of the guide books that I looked at.Not everything is in the Lonely Planet or the Rough Guide !

The VHS is housed in a very interesting example of mid-19th century industrial architecture. It was prefabricated in Britain, shipped to Westphalia and then erected in Bielefeld.
