The UK Border Agency/Home Office have announced that ETS exams (including TOEFL AND TOEIC) are no longer acceptable for TIER 4 Visa purposes.

Applicants now must take the IELTS or Pearson Test of English as proof of English competency.

This is as a result of criminal activity being exposed on a recent Panorama programme. All universities are contacting applicants and informing them that they must sit IELTS.

But can the authorities ensure that the IELTS results are legit? Many students from China and India are submitting fake scores and getting in!

I think the UK Border Agency has become far more stringent over checking the provenance and validity of the documents submitted for a Tier 4 visa.

The British Embassy in Beijing reports that about 52% of applications are rejected after an interview. Equally, most Russell Group universities in the UK insist on either attendance at a minimum of a 5 week pre-sessional course or set their own English Language exam.

This is probably one of the reasons that applications from overseas students have dropped.
