Hello am new here and hope to teach in the ME or China. Each seem to have their pros and cons. I hope this board will be a confirmation to me.

It would helpful if you posted your academic credentials, TEFL training cert, relevant experience, and nationality. But since you're posting on the newbie forum, I'll assume your qualifications are minimal.

Generally, a complete newbie (i.e., zero to less than a years' experience, an unrelated degree, lack of a valid TEFL cert, etc.) won't have the level of qualifications needed for the Middle East. For example, universities in the UAE require a TEFL related MA plus at least 3 years of experience. There are direct-hire opportunities in Saudi Arabia, but again, you'd need solid qualifications. Likewise for Oman and Qatar. On the other hand, contracting companies in Saudi Arabia accept lower qualifications for similar jobs, but the majority of these employers are dodgy and best to be avoided, especially by someone new to TEFL.

Your best bet would be to head to Asia for your first TEFL job.

I'll second that. I came to China and am currently completing my first year EFLing. I have a degree in Education and English. I was concerned about gaining experience first, so I came to Asia and want to get 2 years experience before heading out to the ME. If you have qualifications, might as well go ME where much more is required in order to get a job. If you don't have many qualifications, go to Asia and get the experience first. That's what it really comes down to, especially if you want a future in this long term.

Oman MOHE will take teachers with lesser qualifications BUT they don't pay as much. You have to have FOUR years post-Masters to get the enhanced rate.
