No.
You can't legally stay in Italy more than 90 days out of 180, and no university is going to get you a residence/work permit as a freelance US citizen. Google Schengen zone if you're unfamiliar with the laws.

Do Americn freelancers exist at all in Italy? If so, Did they have to get a conditional offer of employment from some scool or other in order to get freelance status? If universities are not willing to make such an offer, what kind of school does? By freelance status, I mean the sort of thing that looks like you have a business and so you get a residence permit.

No, you have to really have a (fairly large) business. It is extremely difficult to get a legal work permit as a US citizen; the routes are generally limited to marriage to a local, getting an Italian passport via ancestry, or working for a US company at their Italian branch. You can also enrol full time at a real university and then work part time on a student visa (enrolling for language classes part time won't work).

A university COULD hire an American on an exceptional visa, but they have to be able to argue that 'you' bring necessary skills to the job that they were unable to find in any EU candidate for the position. A private language school simply can't argue such a case.

Italy (and France and Spain and Portugal and Greece and the Netherlands and Belgium) are not the same as Poland or the Czech Rep, where non-EU citizens can get legal work permits. It is simply near-impossible here.
