Hi everyone,

I'm currently teaching EFL abroad and have decided to move back home to Australia to live.

I'm planning to teach in Sydney and was wondering if anyone has worked or had any experience with any schools there? IH, ILSC, Navitas, etc. Also, I was wondering if anyone has any experience at working at University of Sydney, Macquarie or UNSW and generally what they require.

I have 5 years ESL experience abroad (Public School, Private University and the British Council), a CELTA, an undergraduate in Business and I'm half way through a MA App. Ling & TESOL via distance.

Any help/advice/comments would be appreciated!

Hi Traveller84,

I've been working for SLS (Sydney Language Solutions) for just over a month now, and have found it to be quite good. The only real downside is that the hours are extremely casual (in that, they don't quite employ full-time/part-time).

That being said, one of my classmates from high school does also teach at Navitas (at Wynyard Green), so she might be able to provide some insight into what the environment is like there. IH, Holmes Insistute, and the universities I can't vouch for, I'm afraid.

Thanks Tarrasque! Great to hear your comments. I had imagined that it would be quite casual, that seems to be the way these days.

Any idea on what the award rate is for ESL teaching in NSW? I've heard it starts at $42 - $72 per hour depending on experience, qualifications, etc.

Not a problem Traveller84 - we're all here to get answers to questions, and to learn.

Sadly, I'm not actually sure what the award wage would be, nor am I largely aware of where the information may be. The closest thing I found (I think?) was on the Fair Work Ombudsman site, detailing English Colleges and non-government English Colleges. I have skim-read both awards, but couldn't quickly find an exact value as to hourly rate.

English Colleges award: https://extranet.deewr.gov.au/ccmsv8/CiLiteKnowledgeDetailsFrameset.htm?KNOWLEDGE_REF=88909&TYPE=X&ID=4775550789799526588889912894&DOCUMENT_REF=343146&DOCUMENT_TITLE=English%20Colleges%20Award%201998&DOCUMENT_CODE=AP780086

Non-Gov't English Colleges Award: https://extranet.deewr.gov.au/ccmsv8/CiLiteKnowledgeDetailsFrameset.htm?KNOWLEDGE_REF=85771&TYPE=X&ID=4758667189799524788889912894&DOCUMENT_REF=343078&DOCUMENT_TITLE=Teachers%20Non-Government%20%28English%20Colleges%29%20%28State%29%20Award%202003&DOCUMENT_CODE=AN120547

I do apologise if it doesn't quite return the answer you're after - it was all I could really find.
