Well, as of 4:30 this afternoon the military became a rather major presence by staging a coup and seizing control of the country.

The curfew is at 10:00 pm for those of you who are still there.

State of Emergency?

Actually, it is not a "State of Emergency". That was issued by the former government back in January and is just the leftover title of this thread.

This is the "Coup d'Etat" performed by the military (army, navy, air force, et al).

Some salient points:

-- Constitution temporarily suspended, government sacked, but senate, courts, and independent agencies still functioning.

-- Public Thai TV channels not broadcasting any programmes and CNN is off the air currently. BBC and Channel News Asia still on the air. Also, most of the internet is working.

-- Military has announced a curfew from 10 pm to 5 am, but tourists, hospital personnel, patients, aviation workers etc are allowed to travel.

-- Subway and Skytrain stopped operation at 9 pm. Shops and malls have also closed early.

-- All banking and ATMs are operating; business goes on as usual.

-- All Thai airports operating as usual.

-- Tourist areas outside of Bangkok have usually operated as normal during coups and curfews and other civil strife.

-- Closure of educational institutes nationwide on Friday (May 23).

-- The curfew and media suppression will likely be relaxed in the coming days or weeks.
