Hello,

I'm currently finishing a M.A. in TESOL in the U.S. I will be a certified teacher at the end of it. I have a CELTA from years ago. I have several years of experience teaching English in Latin America and in the US. I have taught Business English, I have taught in public schools, and I have taught adults in non-profits in the US.

From the perspective of making/saving money, what is the best option for someone with my experience? Working at a University, an International School, a private language school?

Thank you very much,
Jacob

If you want to try for this region, I suggest you get a couple years of post-MA university-level teaching experience Saudi Arabia or Oman before thinking about Qatar.

Why is that? Is Qatar more difficult to find University jobs than Oman and Saudi Arabia?

I specifically am interested in Qatar because of reports on this forum that Westerners find it less difficult to live in than the KSA. I am not particularly interested in being in Saudi Arabia as a stepping stone.

For starters, here are the current expected quals for Qatar University:
A Master's degree in TESOL, Applied Linguistics or ELT from a reputably accredited university/program
At least two years' EAP/EFL/ESL teaching experience at university/tertiary level (overseas experience is desirable)
Experience in testing and assessment, instructional technology and curriculum/materials development
Experience in teaching university-level EAP/EFL/ESL academic writing and/or research skills is preferred
Keep in mind, you're very likely to be competing against MA holders who have relevant, post-grad degree teaching experience in this region. Also, some of the major universities in the Gulf do their annual recruiting at TESOL Arabia.

According to Teach Away's site, a teaching license from your home state/province + relevant teaching experience in your specified content area (gained post-licensure) would qualify you for positions in the better international schools in Qatar.

Nomad, thanks a lot for your detailed response, really appreciate it.

Do you have any information about where to look for international schools in Qatar, ie websites.

Since all of your experience is both pre MA and pre "certified teacher," you won't be eligible for the better university or International School jobs.

Qatar is very small and doesn't have many good jobs on offer in the first place. Since you want to avoid Saudi (not a bad idea... I did... Cool), a decent option is to apply for the recruiter jobs with the Ministry of Education or Ministry of Manpower in the smaller colleges around Oman to get your foot in the door. Do a couple years in Oman... attend TESOLArabia... and have a decent chance at the better jobs in the Gulf.

One point is not to start applying until your degree is officially completed. Applications that say "degree in process" tend to get ignored.
