I went 'spartan extreme' during my first 3 months....when I considered leaving the job/ town on a weekly basis-my investments were....

1 4 rial mattress +b pillow.
1 kettle
1 Iron
1 mop +plastic bucket
1 dustpan and brush
1 mug, glass, paper plates, plastic utensils.....

total cost- under 25 Rials. Sounds bleak? It was- but I wasn't going to invest in accommodation when I didn't know if I would be staying beyond those first 3 months....

Veiled Sentiment & toko:

Most recruitment agencies nowadays add a few rial each month to the basic salary for a "flight home" and "gratuity" to cover the legal requirements.

Over the course of a whole year, this amounts to about 240 Rial for the flight and as much for gratuity. Not enough to pay for a airplane ticket to any country where English is the national language.

I would consult the Ministry of Labor as it appears to me that these contracts do not meet Omani Employment laws.

Recently, in Dubai I spoke with several folks who are leaving CNA-Qatar for various reasons. One, who came in the fall and who is leaving in June, will leave with 2 suitcases and his brought-from-Canada sporting equipment. Another, who came in the fall, is leaving with just 2 suitcases. OTOH, those (with families) who have been at CNA-Q for several years are selling/giving away stuff but still leaving with multiple suitcases OR they are sharing a container with several families

Living spartan-like seems to be common with friends who are single expats, and who don't know if they will stay for more than a few months.. This is especially true of those single men in the construction business. Married expats live in a different style. The same is true with folks leaving HCT in the UAE.

Tazz: Correct, AL Nawa doesn't pay annual flights or for that matter a flight ticket for the teacher to go home at the end of the contract.

They also pay no gratuity/ end of service bonus.
Their medical insurance doesn't cover dental or accidents such as in injuries sustained through a car accident (most agencies don't cover that).

Other conditions that one might have fall under the category of pre-existing, through one's own fault (i.e. tripping over sticking out/uncovered pipes or other hazard that happens to be around buildings or on Omani street paths) and thus also are not covered.

CCN is another agencies that falls in that category.

It is impossible to arrange accommodation prior to having a residency card and bank account with at least 12 bank cheques to cover rent for the year, as these are needed to secure housing.

One might argue that whitegoods (fridge, washing machine), bed, TV, electronic appliances ,etc. are luxuries and not really necessary. Risky to buy/ invest all this money as long as you are under your probationary period and perhaps even after that, since labor laws are changing and you may not have a job after the summer holidays.


UPDATE AS OF JULY 2016

Al Nawa now provide the following:
Basic Salary R.O. 875/-
Transportation Allowance R.O. 60/-
Living/Utility Allow R.O. 30/-

Gross Salary R.O. 965/- per month

Accommodation Accommodation provided or OMR 200 will
be paid in lieu

Ticket Annual Ticket

Gratuity End of Service benefit calculated as one
month basic salary per year of service
completed

Annual vacation 30 calendar days, for every completed year of
service or as declared by the college

NOT REVEALED ON ESL CAFE BUT SENT BY EMAIL.

NOTE: THERE IS NOTHING MENTIONED ABOUT SALARY ACCORDING TO QUALIFICATIONS OR EXPERIENCE .....SO BA + CELTA/TEFL THE SAME AS MA + CELTA/TEFL??

It will be difficult to save for a rainy day or put away for retirement on that salary.

The 30 calendar days holiday is just one month of a break for the entire year.

While there is a one week break in April and December, there is a choice to be made:
Either take one week leave and have it taken out of your salary or keep the money and rock up to work every day to sign in, sit around for a few hours and sign out again.
It's been in place for some time and the agencies are making good money off it as everybody is desperate for one week of respite after three months of slogging away.

Given that class sizes are now up to 40 students, with 22 contact hours and 20-26 administrative hours (depending on the particular assessment in that fortnight), it's really little money for a lot of hardship.
