I have been trying to send e-mail to KFUPM admins for a solid two weeks and having delivery problems. I usually send through a pretty professional mail service in the States, and I invariably get back a "delayed delivery" bounce after a couple of hours, and a flat-out failure notice after twenty-four hours, always citing "timeout" delays.

I try to send from my own smtp server and get "no MX host information retrieved" followed by "connect kfupm.edu.sa" failed. the MX failure message comes back in 5-10 seconds, which doesn't seem right. I have my timeout set for 100 seconds.

Anybody know enough about the KFUPM mail system to tell me whether this sounds believable?

Thanks.

BD

It's believable. Our email was down for a week at Jubail, because Exchange server wasn't working properly, and the sysadmins never found out why, and nor did the guys from Microsoft who tried to fix it either.

If KFUPM is using Exchange I can well believe it.

Ah, another great Microsoft story. Smile Exchange was designed as an intranet server, and its internet functionality was added later. It's got about the same mess of security holes and glitches as other M$ programs.

Thanks for your reply!

The main problem with EXchange is that it does a lot. Something like Sendmail is much more reliable, but it is an email server and nothing else.

It's not uncommon for a big company to have dozens of separate Exchange Servers.

I don't think connecting to the internet presents a specific problem. However it is worth bearing in mnd that the Exchange Routing engine depends on the efficient running of IIS, and that is often the object of attack.
