I'm going to be advising students who are completing their MA TESOL. Some have previous classroom teaching experience and some don't.
I'd be grateful for any info. about what this difference will mean in terms of job possibilities in the Mid East and North Africa.

It seems to depend on three things... the particular employer, how related the experience is to what they are looking for, and demand.
I know people that had a number of years prior to the MA and had a terrible time getting that first job... and ended up at the bottom of the MA scale (around $3000 in most Gulf countries and lower in North Africa or the Levant). I know others who had the same number of years prior, but in exactly what the employer needed (level, skills taught, and to Arabic speakers), and they started closer to $5000 with a new MA.
Naturally it also matters if they can attend TESOL or TESOLArabia and be able to give a good interview.

(Note: For the next year or two, many experienced teachers with MAs and related experience will be in the market due to the end of UGRU and problems with the HCT college system in the UAE. The good positions will be tougher to get than normal) |

Thank you.
I didn't know that about the situation in the UAE.

You might want to spend a little time reading the posts about HCT and UAEU on the Emirates board. Sad stories...

veiledsentiments, what do you mean by "terrible time"? Were your friends looking for a direct hire position with one of the major government universities? Did they have to wait for months on end to get in country after receiving a job offer or were they having trouble even getting an offer?
thanks!

This is a 4 year old thread, but things aren't all that much different. They couldn't get offers at any place that they wanted to work... ie direct hire at the better universities, which are mostly government.
KSA is different from the rest of the Gulf BTW.

different in that in KSA they are more welcoming to those who have a bit of pre-certification experience and have a newly minted MA? |

Different in that some of them use contractors instead of direct hires... and some don't require MAs at all. And different in that some aren't as strict about credentials at all - if one is to believe some of the stuff that gets posted here...

Not all MA in TESOL programs require previous teaching experience nor include a teaching practicum, which is why it's smart to look at the program's course content and not rely on just the title/degree major. |

Also if one goes directly from an education first degree to an MA TESOL, one would have only done the "student teaching" under the first degree which is normally a portion of a semester. My MA under a Fellowship required a minimum of this student teaching, but preferred students with regular teaching experience.
But as relates to this thread... Then one runs into the situation of the better university jobs in the Gulf that require an MA + X years of experience. That means "after" the MA and full-time teaching.
