Obviously, if you forgot coffee or can't find it where you are, this won't help, but I was surprised that no one mentioned boiling and straining coffee instead of using a coffee pot. That is the only way I have ever made coffee, since I like a stronger cup of coffee, more like Cuban coffee. You can get a cloth strainer at Cuban grocery stores, or just use a small metal or plastic kitchen strainer, should be available anywhere in the world. There has actually been some research that shows that using an alternative method such as boiling, or making coffee in a French press is better than using paper filters, as the paper filters out a substance in coffee that appears to lower colesterol.

25 packs of cigarettes from wherever I'm at to tide me over until I can find what I want wherever I land. Most declaration forms say there is a limit of 20 packs (or the equivalent), but they've always waved me through.

I'm about to return to China, last time I was underprepared. This time I think my knees are going to cave in just getting my duffle bag onto the plane.

Clothes.. goes without saying, but in my case, thermals for winter, heavy winter boots as well.

extra socks and underwear.

also, every teaching book I could ever want. Went on a real buying spree and stocked up on resource books and so forth. Got to read them all still, no sense in buying resources if you don't read them. Good thing I still have 2 weeks before I depart.

Role playing game books, Savage Worlds and Burning Wheel. I also picked up the settlers of catan board game and another one I can't remember the name to.

Got a coffee grinder and a 1 cup coffee maker. It is this thing you put on the top of your coffee cup with the coffee in a holder above it, run the hot water through it and whammo, coffee.

Probably will buy a couple bags of coffee beans as well.

So, let's get this right: underpants are expensive in China? and they don't have any decent coffee?

Do people still buy TEFL resource paper books? When planning to travel? Why not just transport a hard drive chock full of electronic versions and print off what you need when you are in your teaching location?

Neither do I. But they are preferable to lugging around 40kg of TEFL materials that should already be in a staff room.
