The opportunity to learn new skills: brewing and fermenting, keeping your mouth shut.

The chance to increase your patience level to approaching infinity.

Being able to fine-hone your reflexes to lightening-fast by driving or walking in traffic.

A good dress-rehearsal for inter-stellar trips should that be a goal in your future.

And last, but not least, that no matter how screwed up you think your own country is, discovering, "Hey, it's really not so bad at all." Very Happy

Hope I didn't use them all up.

Regards,
John

hmmm... think you might have.

Let's put it another way. What does Saudi have that you would stay here for if you didn't have to work here?

Seeing how the expat underclass lives and survives here is
good for your soul, and one's humility.

I can't even think of one thing I would stay in Saudi for, if it wasn't to "work." Do even Saudis or Sauds want to stay in Saudi if they don't have to for some reason? Of course, I can't say that I "have to" work in Saudi. But then again, is what I do or did in Saudi "work" or "labor" or what? I can't say it is/was much of anything. I think the OP had a better question. There are some good things about going to and experiencing Saudi, like time travel and a false sense of interplanetary travel.

Actually, I have three:

1: Food. Compared to other Asian countries like Thailand, China, etc., the abundance of Western food here is a really nice change.

2: Weather. From what I've experienced in Al-Ahsa, the weather is pretty amazing. It rarely rains, nights are warm, and winter months hardly even seem cold. And when it does get hot, just like in Arizona, "it's a dry heat."

3: Coworkers and friends. I have never met so many really cool people (and some total weirdos) in such a short span of time. One of the only benefits of living in such a confined place like a compound is that you can get to know one another very fast and even form a few genuine life-long friendships.

Other than these three things and the money... hmmm...
Everything else just really sucks!

Kabsa and Shawaya.

Communal mutton and camel hump feasts in the desert.

Oases.

The climate in inland areas is pleasant for much of the year.

Little convenience stores generally sell a lot of stuff.

Hitchhiking is widely practiced and safe.

Saudis are mostly pleasant to Westerners.
