I just came back from Fuzhou in South China and I saw a tour guide there with a box on his waist with a 6 inch speaker and Japanese writing on it. A headset microphone was plugged into it and as he spoke in Chinese and fairly decent English translation was "spoken" in a digital device that was about 90% accurate with a 2 second delay. This was so cool. He had 32 gig SD cards for about a dozen different languages. Does anyone know who makes this machine or where I can buy one? Thanks loads!

I know the machine is made in Japan because the writing on it was all Japanese. I ask the tour guide where he got it but he said his daughter bought it on line for him as a gift (she is a student in Japan) I cannot find it anywhere. Each language has a separate 32 gigabyte SD card. He only had English, Russian, and Spanish, but I assume there are more languages. The "voice" quality was robotic but still quite understandable.

Sure it wasn't just a pre-recorded message? If they were a tour guide it wouldn't be hard to do that, just have different sound clips for different attractions. Lots of museums, PoI do this already.

A revolutionary device that no one else has seen, of uncertain origin spotted in Fuzhou with no brand name.

The origin is Japanese because the printing on the device was surely Japanese. I did not see any English writing on it anywhere. The speech rate was also adjustable. When some people said they did not understand, he was able to turn a button to a different setting and the robotic voice spoke slower. The box was about 15 cm by 30cm by 10cm thick (more or less).
