|
|
Hello,
Someone familiar with Vietnam reviewed my resume. He told me I shouldn't put my M.A. in journalism on it because Vietnamese school owners/officials might think I will do reporting on Vietnam. I don't have any intentions of doing so.
My M.A. is from a well-known school, and I won an award for one of my stories. I'm proud of my work, but I got into ESL because there are no jobs in journalism.
I usually leave my journalism degree and list of published work on my resume to show that I know about language and writing in addition to my CELTA and ESL M.A.
Any thoughts or advice?
Thanks,
Aaron in Arizona |

Leave it off any basic TEFL jobs and put it on for anything serious if it has relevance. We tend to get lazy ad just have the one CV but tailor-made for each application usually pays dividends in more professional fields. |

First, I'll admit I'm not in Vietnam yet (maybe next year) but I am and have been involved in ESL hiring in several other Asian countries.
If you have an MA I think you should leave it on your resume but you say you include a list of publications. Consider this list carefully and maybe prune some items.
We did turn down one journalism applicant last year after the interview because we thought he was just looking for a place to base himself while he wrote, and based on his publications, his work wouldn't have been appreciated by the govt. It wouldn't stop me interviewing someone in the future but I'd be careful.
Of course, a good school will find everything you've published under your own name if they want to, but I think having a MA is worth mentioning. And you should look for university work, although it's a bit too late this year. |

Thanks for the thoughts.
My journalism degree is 10 years old, and I never had a job in journalism.
The RMIT job looks good, but I don't have 5 years of university experience.
I'm in the interview process with a university.
The only thing I would write about Vietnam is about food and travel. |

Have a closer look at the criteria. 5 years experience, OR "evidence of a post graduate qualification in teaching". |
