Enjoy this:
(1) All elections countrywide cancelled. No further municipal or local elections. All "governing" positions fully appointed by the military.

(2) Military threatens to ~kill~ four anti-coup protesters over possession of some stickers. Says absolute monarchy is why they had to "take over" http://prachatai.org/english/node/4221

(3) Visa crackdown: Is this the end of the road for unqualified ESL teachers in Thailand? http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/743467-visa-crackdown-is-this-the-end-of-the-road-for-unqualified-esl-teachers-in-thailand/

(4) Junta contemplates removal of 300baht minimum wage back to old system of 190baht or complete removal of minimum wage scale altogether. Welcome to conservative business uber alles BS utopia

(5) Donna Reed: Father Knows Best: New school policy: All female teachers at my school now required TO WEAR A SKIRT. But not too short

(6) The junta leaders were not invited by the French Embassy at its Bastille Day celebration. Thai students sought to meet in front of the French embassy on July 14 to sing the Marsaillaise, but the entire neighborhood was closed down and all access to embassy blocked by soldiers. The next day, demonstrators at the Israeli embassy were allowed to meet and burn an Israeli flag. (priorities)

(7) Photo of Patong beach in Phuket, one of the (once) busiest beaches in Thailand, from last Sunday https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BsfDjPXCUAA8WCa.jpg

(Cool Natural Gas use now at 20 year low in Thailand. http://www.straitstimes.com/news/business/economy/story/thailand-turns-tap-gas-imports-economy-falters-20140713

(9) English language sites
http://uglytruththailand.wordpress.com/
http://asiaprovocateur.blogspot.co.uk/
and French language blog
http://liberez-somyot.over-blog.com/
All now blocked in Thailand.

(10) Thailand's military junta this week raises VAT sales tax by over 42% (from 7% to 10%)

Remember, you are so "lucky" to work here.

Cheers

Let's hope the Red's regain the initiative soon. With all their faults they are the only political party that understands something has to be done to give the poor a chance.

As I mentioned back in May, before the coup:

Quote:
Although it is difficult to predict the future in a place like Thailand since events occur and decisions are made without the benefit of logic in many cases, I would bet on "worse" rather than "better", both short and long term.

The latest "crackdown" involves alcohol and advertising:

Junta Cracks Down on Alcohol Promotions
CityNews staff Aug 26, 2014
Features
CityNews - The junta has warned that it intends to enforce harsh measures regulating the advertising and promotion of alcohol, in a move that will affect thousands of businesses throughout the country.

http://chiangmaicitynews.com/news.php?id=4387

"All promotion of alcoholic consumption is illegal. It is no longer legal to offer any winnings or prizes in relation to alcoholic beverages; all drinks must be sold at normal costs and no gifts, exchanges of goods or discounts of any kind are allowed.

Encouraging people to try an alcoholic drink is not allowed - no inviting people to sample alcohol. No more three-for-two promotions, no more free mixers, free ice, no more beer promotion girls, no written or even spoken promotions or discounts are allowed. No alcohol logos on plates, cups, vases, or anything commercial are allowed. No posters (even old ones) of any alcohol bottles or glasses with logos - or logos themselves - or any other decorative items in a bar or pub or establishment selling alcohol.

If you wear a T-shirt or apparel with an alcohol logo on it and happen to be serving in a bar at the same time, it is considered an advertisement, and that is illegal. When asked to clarify, Taweesak suggested the media ask shops selling such T-shirts to stop doing so.

No old bottles of wines or beer can be used to decorate a business. No drinking is allowed in cars, while riding bicycles, and no drinking after midnight is allowed, even though sales have stopped. No word of mouth promotions, so servers are not allowed to recommend particular brands.

Anyone who is an alcoholic can ask for support. For further details please contact:

The Office of Alcohol Control Committee

Department of Disease Control, Ministry of Public Health "

I was far more afraid for my life (on a regular basis) when working in the US than I ever was or am in Thailand or any other part of east Asia.

People continue to blithely ignore this situation or greatly misunderstand the dynamics and seriousness of it.

Time is running out, folks.

People currently teaching in Thailand are the frogs sitting the luke warm water. It slowly will come to a boil and by then it will be too late.

I enjoyed my time and grief there while I was still young. I would never go back as a full time TEFL teacher. Forget it. Korea, Taiwan or Japan are far better. Maybe even China, if one can find the right job.

Thailand has changed big time and not for the better.
