|
|
Hi all,
Given that the CEFR has become more commonplace, has anyone read any academic articles that suggest how many hours of study are needed to pass each level?
I have done a search and not found much. Yes, I realise that this may vary as there are also many other factors involved in SLA than hours alone.
Maybe a time range for each level is more what I am looking for.
Thanks in advance for any comments, PDFs or links.

Different language organizations have different opinions on this topic.
The British Council's general opinion in terms of "Instructional hours" this implies that the students are also doing some outside work on their language development.
A1 Approximately 90 - 100 hours
A2 Approximately 180 - 200 hours (KET)
B1 Approximately 350 - 400 hours (PET)
B2 Approximately 500 - 600 hours (FCE)
C1 Approximately 700 - 800 hours (CAE)
C2 Approximately 1,000 - 1,200 hours (Proficiency)
Other organizations' opinions about B2 Level:
Alianza Franses DELF (B2) 650-700 hrs
Goethe-Institut Goethe-Zertifikat (B2) 450-600 hrs
Accademia Italiana DILI 320-400 hrs
Instituto Cervantes DELE Advanzado (B2) 280 hrs / 4 years
As you can see opinions differ, again those are "instructional hours" Maybe the Certvantes Institute assumes students are living in Spain and there for receiving a lot of outside imput? Maybe that exam really isn't B2? Or maybe Spanish is the easiest language? Who knows.
There is tons of stuff on the internet, it can be kind of overwelming. This is a great place to start.

After that, you can go right to the source where you can download the full text of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment along with a bunch of other stuff.
