Hello everybody,
I just recently finished my BA in Environmental Studies here in California(wont receive the diploma until about Sept), now I'm contemplating with the idea of moving to Mexico to teach English. I've read TEFL and TESOL courses might be a waste of money. I do have under a year experience volunteering as an ESL teacher at a non profit here in California along with 2 jobs involving environmental education. From reading a few posts on here, I believe my only options would be language schools at first. Im ok with that. Location- wise,Im looking more at Mexicali and Hermosillo due to the lack of an expat population, possibly making for less competition. Would you recommend visiting these cities first and giving a resume in-person, or should I email these campuses first. Any tips are appreciated. More about myself I do speak intermediate Spanish and I am very familiar with Mexican culture, I've visited the country many times(mostly Sonora,BC,and BCS) Thank you |

Question - are you interested in teaching environmental studies? I'm curious as to why you want to leave the field.
You can certainly teach ESL in a number of locations in Mexico simply for being a native-speaker. However, what a good TEFL or CELTA course will teach is you is how to do it properly.
When you volunteered in ESL in California, what methodology was employed in your classes? What oversight and feedback was given to you on the work you did? What external assessment were the students given after their classes with you?
These are some of the questions that a more serious employer will ask you. |
