Hello

I am in my second year working in riyadh. I am grateful that I have a decent paying job...However atthe end of the year I would like to try a different gcc country. I find that Saudi can be very challenging. ...

What place is the best to live and work?

Has anyone lived in Saudi and a different gcc country? Any thoughts?

It depends on the individual's needs and interests. Some people like laid-back Oman while others prefer the lights and action of the UAE. Qualifications are especially key; teachers with a related MA and a minimum of three or more years of tertiary-level teaching can opt for the UAE or Qatar. However, Qatar doesn't accept MAs with online coursework.

Muscat hands down - too much BS and arrogance (for me anyway) in the UAE, sure the money is a lot better and there may be more things to do in the cities but the more laid-back life, outdoors, in Muscat is wonderful - it may be something to do with having a lot less wealth...but that's just my opinion.

Kurdistan FTW! Less pay, better life.

Kurdistan (and Iraq in general) is not a member of the GCC.

Bahrain is a pretty cool place to be. Not sure what teaching there is like.

Saudi is incredibly depressing, so I'd avoid there at all costs.

Kuwait I imagine would be as dull as Saudi Arabia, and UAE/Qatar/Oman should be pretty cool

Oman, less money, nicer atmosphere. UAE, more money, more traffic, less parking, atmosphere not bad, especially outside of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Jeddah in SA used to be good, not sure about now. In any case best location in SA.

A bit late to the party but I have something to add.

You can have a lousy or a great time in any GCC country. They're all frickin' hot in the spring/summer/autumn, they all have 'ways' very different to what you're used to, they all have some points which are particularly bad (the 'some' depends on you), and they all have some dodgy, useless companies employing dodgy useless employees.

Any country, in or outside the GCC can be challenging. I wouldn't go looking to another GCC country, just because I want to find something better. You might be fortunate and find a better company, or you may be unlucky and not. Rather than thinking it's going to be a lot better than Saudi, certainly look at different roles in different countries but don't assume anything.
