For some people there are families to consider. Will your job in Thailand pay for kids' education in a decent school ? My job in KSA did !

Ah, I had forgotten you are still in the pre-marital state and have no offspring to worry about !

Your notion of what constitutes a happy life seems rather narrow.

Perhaps try to open your mind a little more and try to understand that people (ESL teachers) are a very diverse group. Not everyone shares your narrow biased viewpoint...if you are happy where you are that's great, but why this need to put down other's choices...this only makes you appear narrow minded.

What 'viewpoint'? The viewpoint that one should be allow to have a drink, a girlfriend, go to the movies, have freedom to wear what they like etc? And that removal of these freedoms should be compensated with a hell of a lot more than a shade over the average Western salary? (remember the average westener doesn't have an MA either).

Or do you actually think that dustbowl is an oasis of culture and enlightenment? I've got to say I've never met anyone who expresses that 'viewpoint'.

Someone asserted in this thread that a Saudi TEFL gig is better than a Western minimum wage job. It's really, really not. Plus a minimum wage job, by definition, accepts pretty much anyone who breathes air. The Saudis actually have requirements, which is laughable considering the crap salaries they offer to live there.

Can't resist pointing out the obvious - how do you expect to get to the marital state when you're not allowed to associate with the opposite gender in Saudi?

Though for what it's worth, I've never been a fan of private education anyway on a moral level, despite working in one such school now. Though even if I was - my kids education wouldn't be placed before the whole families (including my own) greater happiness - and going to the KSA guarantees misery by the truckload until the plane departs.

Not my experience. People have different experiences and see things differently. Didn't they teach you that at college ?

My experiences in KSA were generally positive with different employers at different times and in different locations.

You had a bad time. Put that behind you and enjoy your life.

we're all full up here with negativity.

Tell us something new that folks here haven't heard before.

And then we have the truly unfortunate: those teachers on six-figure salaries in Saudi Arabia who also get laid and have a drink. Sometimes, it even happens during the week! Who has to wait for the weekend? Gasp!
