I am a 49 year old American English teacher with an MA TESOL, CELTA, 20 years teaching experience (mostly at the tertiary level), but NO US/UK public school certification. What is the job market like in the Philippines in general for someone with my background and age? What sort of salary can I expect to earn and would my age be a major road block to employment. Would IELTS tester training/certification help in the Filipino job market? |

IF you qualify as a Balikbayan or have/can get a 13a (married to a Pinay) visa then you may find work in tertiary sector.
You have virtually no chance in the public school system and likely no chance in the international school sector due to licensure and visa issues.
You are aware that the Philippines is a net exporter of English teachers to the bulk of Asia and has an excess of qualified native English speaking teachers (often US educated, dual Fil/Am citizens) in the country who have no visa issues.
The final straw might be the wages.
Licensed Filipino teachers at home (teacher 1) typically earn about p15000 pesos/month ($350) and a Phd holder will earn about 30k php ($700). Something tells me you are not likely to work for those wages.
If you are lucky you may find a Korean or Japanese language center who may pay 30-50k ($700-1000) for a well credentialed native speaker.
Go go China, Korea or Vietnam.
The wages are better, jobs are easy to find and if there is a pretty Pinay in the background of this picture you can take her with you after you get settled.
