Hi,

I just have a question about 'Road Experience' Recruiters. They have sent me some information saying that if I'm new to Thailand then I MUST pay and take their 'Orientation' course. This seems strange to me as my understanding was that the recruiters got paid by the schools they recruited for, not by the teachers themselves... Anybody had any experience with them?

Cheers,

Ben

You are confusing recruiters/agencies in Thailand with recruiters for places like Korea.

In THAILAND only a fool would use a recruiter. Yes, they charge a fee or collect a portion of your salary (read - they are leaches). Fools and their money are soon parted. It is NOT necessary to use a recruiter NOR is it necessary to pay a fee to get work in Thailand.

If you want to teach in Thailand then:
Get a double entry tourist visa (effectively gives you 6 months to sort yourself out) and a plane ticket.
Be here in late April.

Provided you are here in late April, have a degree, a "correct passport" (or TOEIC score in lieu of being a "native speaker") and a pulse you can get a basic, entry level EFL teaching job.
There are typically about 10,000 positions to fill in April for May start dates.

If you don't have a degree then the point is moot since legal work (defined as having the proper visa and work permit) is not possible as a teacher but there is still work to be found (illegal but common enough). The risks (not being paid, getting caught-fined and deported, doing a visa run and not being allowed to re-enter the country) of working on a tourist visa are yours to bear.

Never heard of "road experience" so cannot comment.

Unless they are offering a standard 120 hour + 6 hours observed teaching TEFL cerificate, you should NOT pay anyone to get a job. If they want you to take their Orientation, they should provide that for free.

This is actually a common misconception. "Agencies" who simply find you a job and then wash their hands of you are usually collecting a flat fee, but sometimes get a monthly commission. Most of the major recruitment/placement players in Thailand are more "full-service" offering curriculum support, visa/work permit, insurance, bonuses, accommodations, etc. These placement companies can often be a good choice for anyone new to the TEFL world. In most cases, these companies do not affect the salary a teacher will get. The "agencies take a 'cut' of your salary" myth continues, yet no one has been able to show me all these illustrious 50,000 baht/month jobs being offered by public schools not using agents, recruiters or placement companies. Agency/Recruiter or not you are likely to get 30-35,000/month for a starter job in Thailand. Any money saved by schools recruiting on their own will line the pockets of the Thai administration or best case scenario be put into school improvements. The foreign teacher wont see it in 95% of the cases at the public school level.

If you have some experience, you shouldn't need to use a placement company or agency unless they can offer you a specific location or school you are looking for or you dont want to deal with multiple interviews, demo lessons, etc in 40 degree heat and rain.

Just checked their site.

They don't offer a standard 120+6 TEFL so DONT PAY them anything.
