Dear Deats,
"Singapore probably has the best street food in Asia, if not the world."
Which may explain why there are no rats.
Regards,
John |
Two things. I found I could make tastier, and less expensive food at home than any Singers street food, and so could anyone else who knows the rudiments of cooking. And the hugest rat I ever saw was in Singapore. It was the length of a plastic garden chair's width, not counting the tail.It could not have been the only rat in the country. More likely it was the mother of all Singaporean rats. |

I stayed with a chef when I was in Singapore and he told me that most locals eat out every day because it is cheaper than cooking in. When we went to the grocery store we saw what he meant. You can eat a really good meal on the street for less than buying the ingredients in the supermarket. |

Thus far Spain has been my least favorite country. Low salary, mediocre food, cliquey people redeemed by cheap wine and a pleasant working environment. It's amazing how much I hear Europeans gripe about Asia only to see Spain at least suffering from so many of the same issues and don't even get me started on what a pain it was to get the visa. Lovely enough to visit but no way would I ever live here again.
Second to that I guess would be Cambodia. Nice enough people but man the expats were a sad mess and general atmosphere was hard to get a handle on. Wouldn't mind going back but am in no rush. |
The food is good but there is a tendency for Spanish people to say it's the best in the World which can be annoying.
Cliquey people-people often have the same friends they had at school but I don't know if I'd call them cliquey. This might just be a result of getting older where it becomes more difficult to make friends.
Queue jumping in Madrid rarely occurs in my experience and I've never knowingly been ripped off in a bar (the local Police are pretty on top of making sure prices are displayed etc.). I can't say it definitely never happened but I can't say it's never happened in Scotland or France either/ |

Agreed. I spent two years there and just came back from a trip to Andalucia. At no point did I even suspect I was being overcharged. I speak Spanish but am obviously not a native. I find it hard to believe that you'd be overcharged just for not speaking Spanish.
I feel like there might have been a solitary incident that's been extrapolated by the OP. Or another agenda. |

I'm not particularly well-travelled (or was too young to have an opinion) but I found Argentina a little tiresome at times. Lovely people but a lot of scams and Buenos Aires was crumbling in most parts. Whoever came up with "Paris of South America" needs to have a re-think.
There are things that annoy me about every country
Scotland- relationship with alcohol and so much casual violence
Spain- people boasting about Spain being the best
France- the obsession with tradition- the cheese only passes once, baptisms for non-religious people (though I just don't attend) and let's not forget the worst-behaved students (at university level)
Having said that, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait sound awful. |

Saudi Arabia. Absolute squandering of wealth, like nothing else. |

Well, if there's squandering going on, someone's got to be on the receiving end.

I say it again I've only been to 5 and the worst I guess is Indonesia. I know Bali was great but poverty really hits me, from the part where I went it was slum all over. |

I've been to 43 countries, and Pakistan is my choice for worst, especially if you are traveling with an uncovered head, but conservatively dressed western woman.
I am also grateful that the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Iran squandered their petro dollars on me too. |

Can't speak to Kuwait, but I had a great time in SA.
Land of the 5 S's: Sun, Sand, Surf, Sid, and S*x and Sailing and SCUBA too. |

Some people hate Saudi. London is the place I detest. Other bits of England are quite cool - both figuratively and literally. |

Sri Lanka without a doubt. Didn't teach there, but suffered a 2 week holiday there in my younger days. |
