I am thinking of coming to Thailand to backpack for about a month, and then look for a teaching job.
Since I am planning to travel first, I was hoping you could offer advice about how to pack.
Is it feasible to "backpack" with a suitcase? Should I bring a suitcase and carry around some extra stuff (i.e. nice clothing for teaching)? Or would it would be overly cumbersome to go backpacking with a suitcase? How expensive would it be to buy nicer clothing for teaching there? |

Why not have the best of both worlds?
Bring your suitcase. Put your backpack in it and bring it with you.
When you get to Thailand, put your backpacker stuff in your pack for travel and store the rest while you travel (only cost about 30-100 baht/day) at most guest houses.
Finish your trekking... retrieve your stuff and get a job.

Only use a suitcase if you can't physically fit everything in a backpack. My girlfriend and I use two suitcases, 2 large backpacks, and 2 medium-sized backpacks when moving, primarily because my girlfriend has lots of clothes and we have too much stuff now.
If we go on vacation we take the big backpacks with a smaller one tucked inside for day trips. The backpacks are Chinese military surplus....awesome quality for the $15 USD or whatever we paid for them. Water-proof, tear proof, rugged as heck, lots of pockets. I will never take a suitcase on a vacation again, especially to SE Asia....the roads and sidewalks are just terrible for dragging suitcases and it can be hard to fit a large suitcase in taxi's trunk. |
