So...I got another job offer. It's so nice to be wanted.
Has anyone heard of this place? |

Hi KaChing,
Long time no see!! I guess that is Ittihad University? I think it is in RAK, right? Sorry to be of no help since I haven't encountered anyone who has worked there. Hopefully someone will show up.
What kind of package are they offering?

The monthly salary is 5 488 AED, and there are housing and furniture allowances of 16 000 AED each.
Is UAEU the only reputable university in the country? |

Hi kaChing,
There are a number of reputable universities in the Emirates, but all of them tend to require an MA. If I recall correctly, you don't have one, do you? I would guess from that low salary offer that you do not.
HCT says on its site that it doesn't require MAs, but most of its teachers have them, and those that don't are people with tons of experience. Over 10 years ago there, with an MA, I was offered a salary double your offer.

I have an M.Ed. and was accepted at UAEU at, like you said, double that Ittihad offer. I was surprised at the discrepancy.
Actually, I'll be heading over there soon, in August. Woo hoo! |

Hey kaCHING
Mabruk on going to UAEU. I hope you like it. I have a friend that loves it up in RAK, but I think that I would prefer Al-Ain myself. (especially for double the salary!!)
Do come on and share your experience this coming year when people are here asking what UAEU is like to work for.
Sorry to be so late answering this. I must have just missed it.

So far I've been very, very impressed with UAEU. It's extremely well organised. The website has a 20+ page information guide for new teachers and there's a forum for newbies to post questions. In addition, the university has a mentoring program in which an established teacher is assigned to each newbie. My mentor has already emailed me numerous times with all sorts of helpful advice and information.
Maybe I'll hate it when I get there, but it's making an excellent impression - so far. |

Wow,
Even I am impressed!! I often think that half of the battle surviving in the Middle East is to not have overly high expectations, pack your sense of humor, and be able to go with the flow.
Oh yes, and to enjoy the 'adventure.'

That's good advice for overseas living in general. Ya gotta be flexible.
One of my relatives (from Canada), while visiting me in Japan, said she wanted it to be the same but different. How do you please someone like that? |
