But you do realise that there's a difference between the UK system of benefits and most other countries? The UK system is universal, while the Polish, Spanish, German, Greek et al systems all work on the basis of having paid into the system first.

As for them claiming child benefit if they move back - if the child is resident in the UK, then they're entitled to it. It's a stupid system and makes no sense whatsoever, but those are the rules. Don't blame Poland for the UK having a downright retarded tax credit/benefit system.

The UK unemployment benefit is not entirely universal. The main unemployment benefit is Jobseekers Allowance which can be either contribution-based or income-based. Both are taxable, but contribution-based is non-means tested, whereas income-based is means tested.

If you do not qualify for either of these you may be entitled to Income Support.

Perhaps that is why so many immigrants are risking their lives everyday to get into the UK.

It is absolutely retarded in every sense of the word. Giving people money without them ever having contributed anything? Where's the logic in that? Let alone the madness of the tax credit system - which is so ridiculously confusing that even HMRC themselves mess it up frequently.

Universal Credit will help, but that's assuming it ever actually launches country-wide.
