Can those of you who have been in Oman for past Eid holidays let the newcomers know how many days off your employer has given in past years for the upcoming Eid Al Adha? I understand the holiday won't officially be announced until shortly before, but knowing a probable range (4 days, 7 days, 10 days?) would be helpful for making tentative travel plans. |

You'd really have to check with your particular employer. |

It will probably be around a week-7 days...if you work for a ministry of manpower/education college.....but it won't be announced until last minute-making any travel arrangements outside the country very awkward.... |

I very quickly gave up the idea of traveling during holidays in Oman. You never know until just before... usually the day before... when it starts and finishes. This isn't really to punish us, but the Omanis will disappear 3-4 days before a holiday starts if they know when it will be. The employers have no idea either. It comes from the government. Private colleges will usually be shorter than government institutions.
It will be anywhere from 4-10 days... flip a coin... as good at predicting this number as any.

Most people don't travel far during Eid for the reasons VS gave. Those who leave Oman usually travel somewhere close by, like Dubai or AD. |

Thanks for your responses. Travel within the Gulf region sounds like a good idea for this holiday. |

That's the rationale that I've heard for it as well but, although I can only speak from my experience from working at my college in Salalah, the late announcements for holidays doesn't seem to work/achieve its purpose. The locals here just guess when the break will be and take what they consider their 'reasonable' number of extra days off anyway. Both before the holiday is announced and after. If the holiday ends on, say, a Tuesday, most students won't surface again until Sunday the following week then, often, whine like mongrel dogs for having been marked absent when they come back . However, that's just been my experience and, as to what it's like elsewhere, I couldn't really say. |

1st Sgt Welsh,
That's how it is in the UAE, KSA and I suspect all of the Gulf. |

Doesn't surprise me and I pretty much figured as much. Just wondering though, if anybody knows, if the last-minute announcements prior to holidays are also typical in the region? No real reason to ask, just curious. Many thanks. |

KSA direct hires generally get 9-10 days off for both eids --- no waiting until the last minute to find out which days. |

The first day is always known as it is a set day of the calendar rather than a sighting of the moon. So, once Ramadhan month ends, you know what day this Eid will begin. The wild card, as always, is when it will end.

That's interesting, I didn't know that. Thanks. Anyway, be that as it may, the link still can't hurt, because I, along with many I've spoken to, didn't have a clue as to when it's occurring and getting the start date out there a bit more can't be a bad thing. |
