|
|
Hello fellow EFL educators,
I've been offered a position in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. The pay is 1000 USD a month (clear of tax) with accommodation (self-contained apartment) included.
About me:
-24 years old
- English graduate
- CELTA holder
Questions:
- Is this package decent?
- What is the cost of living in this location?
-What sort of standard of living can I expect?
-Any other tips / words of wisdom?
Thank you all,
Matt |

Hi EFL Educator,
Thanks for the input. Genuinely was not sure what the going rate would be for someone starting their EFL career in this place.
The impression I get is that the cost of living there is extremely cheap.
Any idea what kind of standard of living I could expect with this sort of pay? I'm not looking so much to save, more there for an experience. However while there I desire a comfortable standard of living.
Cheers, |

Hi nomad,
Thanks for that, however some of the numbers seem dubious to me - for example transportation costs. My understanding is that for these Uzbekistan is cheap - for instance someone told me cabs are routinely around $2 per trip.
My feel is that Numbeo is a little off at times... anyone with more first-hand experience please let me know |

Whoops, my mistake, I must have been looking at the wrong numbers. Actually transportation costs are what I would expect |

Then ask on one of the numerous, general Uzbek expat forums listed on the Net instead of waiting for a response here. |

Opportunities in Uzbekistan do not come up very often. I would go for it myself and utilise the opportunity as a springboard.
How many of us are ever given the opportunity to learn Uzbek by immersion ? |

Thanks scot47, indications are that the wage offered is more than enough to live comfortably in Uzbekistan. The package was slightly improved and I've taken the job!! It's my first EFL job so I can't expect A1 wages first up.
I'm excited, what an exotic destination! |

Apparently Russian is somewhat of a lingua franca in Tashkent.
Anyone have any tips as to the best way to brush up on it in a 4 week period? Obviously don't expect much fluency, and I haven't got much money to throw around. |

Thanks nomad soul, will do. Sorry
I've also downloaded some audiobooks and podcasts, been listening to them for a good proportion of the day.
Haha EFL Educator, I have come across that already but I can't recall what it means. I think it's a greeting? :S |
