Can anyone tell me what different contract lengths are usually available in Turkey, specifically Istanbul? Or if contract lengths differ between different types of jobs (high school, universities, professionals, etc.)?

Also, given the recent events in Turkey, would Istanbul be a relatively safe place to teach?

Most contracts are renewable annually on mutual agreement. A few jobs offer a two year contract and most contracts have a probation period where either side can terminate without any penalty.

There are potentially more risks but nowhere is completely safe. Look at Brussels today.

At universities, it's usually a year. I believe one friend has a 2 year contract.

As far as safety, there are risks. We've had 2 attacks in Istanbul. Any American military and diplomatic personnel in Istanbul and southern Turkey have been instructed to leave. Since Turkey's closer to Syria, there are more risks to Turkey by ISIS. That said, as someone said, there were attacks in Paris and Brussels. You come here at your own risk. I don't think we can really advise you in terms of the security situation in the future. We don't have a crystal ball.
