I will give a couple examples from Tokyo.
In one class, the teacher has a tablet and just makes random pairs and the students have to talk. They decide the topics. I figured it was just for a professors research. 90 minute class for a university.
There is a list of 8 errors which are mostly grammatical.
If a student makes a mistake, the pair must stop, and the next pair is assigned.
At another place, all students use tablets given by the school, which they must buy. But what if they forget them or the battery dies?
They must bring their own headphones to do the listening exercises.
They take the test on the PC and e-mail it. Teachers do not have to grade it.
I can see downsides to the technology but it seemed to me that as a prospective teacher, you have to be so gung ho about it, or else you don't get the job. |

That is it. No textbooks, no syllabus. Just a tablet the teacher uses to record the amount of time spent talking, recording errors (8 grammatical errors), and assigning partners.
That is a speaking class.
Apparently it works, as students get better, but with a lack of input, I was skeptical. Guess that is why that university rejected me.
Japanese can be passive so that is the idea. Sometimes topics are given.
I kind of assume the professor in charge of this sees this as a way of doing research. |
