I rarely see ads for anywhere in Siberia. Even Vladivostok and Novosibirsk almost never show up on the jobs section of Dave's, so Sakhalin comes as a huge surprise to me...

...not that I'm going to apply to it (6 day, 30-40 hr work week, plus the isolation might make the novelty of the location wear thin).

However, in the off chance that the person who accepts this position sees this post, I'd be interested to hear how it goes.

I know someone who worked on Sakhalin for a few years. She loved it. Very nice people, motivated and hardworking and as it's still kinda cool to be a native English speaker there, people were a bit friendlier and more outgoing than in most big cities.

I wouldn't be surprised if you could count all the native English teachers on one finger. That being said, it does look like an amazing adventure.

Seems like a situation where it'd probably make sense to negotiate for less hours...

There was a very bad report from someone who worked in Sakahalin a couple of years ago:main complaints were about the director of the school who forbade them to speak with anyone else who was not approved of by her! etc etc...Apparently it's also expensive due to its isolation and being an oil region where there are well-heeled ex-pats working etc. and also very hard to get out of?I think it was on this site so it might be worth searching for it?

You are correct, Sakhalin just seemed so random that I didn't even think of running a search! The director sounds like a nightmare, micro managing people's personal life and trying to shame staff in front of others, but the medical test alone would make me take a pass on this frontier outpost.

I've been to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk three or four times. The city itself doesn't offer too much in the way of entertainment or edification, and most of the nicer places (restaurants/bars/etc) -- as mentioned -- are actually quite spendy, due to its location and the fact that there are many expats and well-off, non-local Russians living there (oil and gas industry).

However, if a person really enjoys skiing/snowboarding in winter, and hiking the other month Smile, then it could be a pretty cool place to live.
