I am a native English speaker. Been teaching in Medellin for a few months but just signed contract. 24 hours per week for 1 million pesos per month (minus health 80000). Now they're telling me I must do the cambridge or ielts exam because the teachers must have an English qualification. On top I must pay 500000 pesos for the fee. Nevermind the fact that I have been teaching these classes for 5 years. I have 2 university degrees from English universities and the celta. This seems beyond insanity. Obviously for non native I would expect it. My question is has anyone else had to do this? I would rather not pay half a month's salary for a completely useless qualification. Any comments much appreciated. |

I don't teach in Colombia but am curious as to what specific Cambridge exam they're referring to. Your CELTA, university degrees, and the fact that you're a native-speaker should be enough. |

If they're only offering you 24 hours a week and 1 million a month, I'd laugh in their faces and walk out. |

Look for a new job.
I'm in Bucaramanga, a much smaller city than Medellin. I just signed a contract for 24,000 COP per hour for 24 hours a week. Comes out to about 2.3 million COP per month. This is a language institute. |

PittsburgSound:
How do you like Bucaramanga?
Have you spent time in Medellin? If so, how would you compare the two?
Also, what are your quals. for the gig you've got now?
Thanks. |
