Hi Everybody,
This is my first post on eslcafe. Thanks, Dave!

I've been teaching English for 20 years. Taiwan, Cambodia. I have TEFL, and I'm currently teaching essay writing at a university. I have no problem where I am, I just like different experiences, keeps life interesting! I'm thinking maybe Jakarta would be interesting, but I've never been there. So, I'm doing homework.

1. Are there lots of jobs? Is Jakarta the place with the most jobs and best pay, or are there better places to be in Indonesia? Mind you, I don't want to work in an isolated environment. I want somewhere fun!

2. I'd like to know what the schools are like. Is the work environment decent?

3. How about bureaucracy? How can I stay in Indonesia if they're only offering 1 month visas? Obviously, there's a way, but I don't know how to play that game.

4. Living costs- the basics.

That's about it. I'm just gathering information so that I can make an informed decision. There used to be a great site breaking down the Bangkok teaching scene, I wish the same exists for Jakarta. Thank you all for your time!! Very Happy

The 1 month visa is for tourists. A work visa lasts for one year and requires your prospective employer to do some paperwork for the immigration authorities so that the visa can be issued via the Indonesian consulate in your country of residence. This, I am told, is the best way to do things if you can line up a job in advance.

Pls read other posts in this forum regards visa restrictions - like it is very expensive to leave Indonesia for a holiday abroad midway through your contract and requires your employer to authorise an exit visa.

Thanks, gugelhupf,
When I get a bit of free time, I will hash through the other posts for visa info.

I'm also wondering about visa requirements!

There are lots of places to go within Indonesia though, so unless you want to go back home for a holiday mid-contract, it's not usually much of a problem. I went to Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore at the end of my contract, and my work paid the exit fee.
