I have been reading the forums on Dave’s ESL for about 5 years, but this is my first post!

I hope to find seasonal work teaching teens/adults in Mexico from January to April. Is this possible?

About me:
I am 42, female, and Canadian. I have 3 years experience teaching at Canadian universities, but only 1 year teaching English. I have a 195-hour TESL certificate, a 4-year degree in (Building) Technology Management, a 3-year Architectural Engineering Diploma, and 20 years of business administration experience. I am well-travelled and I am currently working on my Spanish language skills.

Why seasonal work in Mexico:
- I teach ESL through a Canadian university (June-Aug.)
- I teach Business English and Architectural Engineering (Sept-Dec.)
- Winters here are long and cold.
- My husband works seasonally too.
- We could drive to Mexico with our 2 dogs.
- Mexico is fascinating!

Specific questions:
1. Will any decent schools hire for only 4 months?
2. Is it possible to do get a work visa for short-term/seasonal work?
3. Is my background suitable for getting hired for Business English?
4. If I come to Mexico in December, is that too late to find January work?
5. Any advice? Thank you!

1. Will any decent schools hire for only 4 months?

Schools won't, but language institutes might.

2. Is it possible to do get a work visa for short-term/seasonal work?

Possible yes, but the likelihood is near zero.

3. Is my background suitable for getting hired for Business English?

Definitely! it sounds like you have much more experience in business than most who teach in that area.

4. If I come to Mexico in December, is that too late to find January work?

The only work you are going to find is under-the-table. December is pretty quiet, so you won't even be able to interview with anyone anyway until the 2nd week of January or so.

5. Any advice? Thank you!

My advice is come as a tourist and don't bother with work. You're not going to find anything meaningful for such a short period anyway. Or, volunteer if you are really interested in gaining some experience and making connections for your next - hopefully longer - visit.
