I put a Ciechan IPA next to a Hop Monster to compare, and could pick out the Polish IPA, or AIPA, as it's called, instantly i.e. because it tasted more bitter in a bad way. Maybe, as Shake says, it's the water. Not a beer expert by any stretch.

It's because Ciechan is a corporate beer, it's now equivalent to Zywiec or Heineken. Typical mass produced swill. If you're looking for some really nice IPA's, the Artezan brewery just opened a small pub in Warsaw, their beers are great. You can find great beers at my favorite watering hole that I mentioned before [Piekna Mery on Piekna St.] at a reasonable price.

[quote="Master Shake" It seems like every time I go back to Warsaw the nightlife scene has reinvented itself.

I find Warsaw to be absolutely fascinating in this regard. I guess Poland in general but since I've spent most of my time in Wawa, that's my point of reference. I wouldn't say that it's reinventing itself but it's going through all the changes that transpired over time in the west but in fast forward. Poland's been trying to catch up with the western culture for the past 25 years. Unfortunately, a lot of people are left behind in this race and then again, there are those who are opposed to or not really happy with the changes. I can't blame them either. I remember Poland during the communist times and the quality of conversation far surpassed that of the modern day Pole. Touche.

8 years ago there were no multitaps to speak of, most regional beers were just lagers and ales, some better than others but no crafts unless someone you knew brewed. However, there were more underground music venues with quality music and art acts and open minded hosts ready to book any act. There were a lot of gay clubs and actual pubs.

The main problem that I have with today's bars in Warsaw, is their lack of soul. They are just watering holes, places where you come to drink good beer but they're absolutely sterile of atmosphere. It's difficult to find an actual pub and even when you do find one, they always feel forced, unnatural and sort of... I guess sterile would be the best way of putting it.

This is something that's an issue not just with pubs [but since this is a beer thread...]. Coffee shops or places that are trying to resemble lounges [klubokawiarnie] and other places of music and art.

This, of course is easily explainable by understanding this country's history and not so distant past. I would love for people here to follow Hungary's suit. Budapest is full of post socialist pubs and bars that still have THAT particular look but added on to it instead of getting rid of it completely.

Do you guys have your favorite places in Warsaw or other cities? ... Maybe I should make a phresh thread for that.

Very hard to find decent bars in Poz these days. Hard to find restaurants that deserve the prices they charge too. Maybe it's cos I'm older and don't frequent student places these days but there were realy cool bars in the 90s. Everyone has sold out to the big buck and ikea lego furniture-it's like drinking in an airport bar quite often. Even Mosq in Bydgoszcz has disappeared up its own arse.

Mielzynski is City Park is a nice wine bar, Ratuszowa in the rynek is a decent restaurant but I really can't think of 1 bar which makes me think brilliant. Dragon sold out years ago and is just full of arses, Ministarstwo Browaru is pretty good but packed these days, Off Garbary is for the younger, fashion victim set, there are some OK places around Srodka but nothing you'd write home about. The scene in Poland is a poor copy of Berlin.

Poznan is nice for different reasons but party time wise, it's pretty crap. I don't think it's ever had a good club....well Post Dali was good for a while but it's gone.

The live music is nearly always dreadful and just loud.

The beer has improved exponentially.

The expats who live there like Tanners and Agawa.

There are loads of Piwo Pijalnia type 1960s places which are cheap as anything. Seems to be a retro fashion for beer, shots, smalec and sledz.

Still good for the single lads tho.... Smile even though foreigners have lost any kudos they once might have had.
