There were some articles in the paper about teaching privately in Singapore and how academies are making big money.

HOw tough is it to get private students and how much does one charge?

I'm familiar with the private tutoring market in HK / China but not so much Singapore. I was under the impression that a significant percentage of the Singaporean tutoring market is taken up by tutoring academies. So I'm not sure how much of the market remains for individual private tutors. I would also be interested in finding out more about this.

Yes, tuition is a big deal here. Lots of people make a living from it. However, the vast majority of these are Singaporean ex- or current MOE teachers and are being paid because of their familiarity with the exams and local assessment.

There is a little space for ESL tutors working with expats from China, Japan Korea etc

Thanks for the clarification. So what can an experienced private tutor earn per month on average?

Absolutely no idea I am afraid. Think S$60 plus an hour.

Ok, so pretty decent hourly rates which could lead to a nice monthly income level if a tutor could build up a good student base. Similar to HK in many respects then.
